There have been lots of mentions of similar problems caused by QuickTime 5 on the Apple Discussions, and the offending part of the QuickTime 5 install is something called the "QuickTime JPEG Update" extension which is installed by QT5. It causes all sorts of bizarre problems and should be removed completely from one's system folder. Its removal also seems to cause absolutely no deterioration of QT's performance in any other way, and in fact, improves the operation of your Mac!!
