Hi,
 we are ALL getting this problem - but only when the AOL mailbox is 
empty. AOL seems to have changed something and caused this problem. 

Some people are devising applescript to send an email to their AOL 
mailbox, just so it's not empty. 

Anyway, you're already figured out a reasonable interim solution, and 
that is to send AOL mail separately from receiving it.
