Be sure the server port is set to 587.
Also make sure in the email address field of the Account Information preference for your AOL settings you use the suffix "@aol.com". You don't need to have that in the User name, but it made a difference for me in the address field.
Those are the areas I had to double check on the three machines I set up for AOL with Mail.app.
