This is a sign of a corrupted database,  actually. I used to get this, 
along with the messages, "this message has been permanently deleted".

Try a rebuild, and if behavior doesn't revert to normal, a "advanced 
rebuild", and if that doesn't do it, create a new database at some point 
- you can't fix it beyond a certain point, I tried for years until it 
finally caught up with me.
