There is a relatively recent compression technology which can increase speed significantly on a 56K dialup number, apparently. My ISP is offering this without extra charge; however, one does need OS X to take advantage of the technology.
My "Mac Only"ISP is TheMacISP.com, http://www.appleisp.com/, which was formerly known as AppleISP.com. AppleISP acquired the name rights to TheMacISP and switched to use it (don't quite know why - maybe an Apple Inc. trademark thing??). Anyway, the ISP is a division of SoWhat Software, the oldest (second oldest?) independent Apple software company in existence, having started writing software for the original Apple computers (pre-Macs). I've had them as my ISP for going on 4 years now and have been delighted with them. Rare problems and those only minor; excellent tech support (THE tech guy himself usually answers the phone!); nationwide number availability, although the company is located in Southern California. They have a $9/month, six-month introductory offer, with regular price being $14.95/month.
