It could be an authentication issue, or it could be something else.

BUT, you said you are using AOL as your dialup? I believe AOL blocks all 
SMTP traffic when you dial onto their system. This is to prevent you from 
using any SMTP server other than AOL's. Of course, I don't think you can 
directly set your client to use the AOL mail server. But I did think that 
it trapped the traffic and passed it on to their own server. Maybe it is 
trying to do that, but in typical AOL fashion, is broken right now.

Running a stream log will give you a much more definitive answer as to 
what is going on. With a stream log you can see the communication between 
the email client and the server.
