Can you try any of the following?  I presume that if you're running 
Emailer, you are in OS 9.x, and you are not running Emailer in OS X.  So 
perhaps your errant file is on the OS 9 Desktop, not the OS X Desktop.

1.  Drag the bad file from the Emailer attachment window (at the top of 
the message) directly to the Trash.  Empty the trash.

2.  If the bad file is on the Desktop, or in a folder, make a new file of 
exactly the same name in another folder, and drag the new file onto the 
Desktop or folder where the old file is.  When you see the "...do you 
want to replace it?" message, answer "Yes."

3.  Get a utility such as Filetyper, open the file in Filetyper, and make 
it visible.
