The first advice I can give you is... Set the Left button to a normal
single click. If you want to do any fancy clicking, do it with the right
button (basically, the opposite of what you are doing now).

The reason for this is simple... the rest of the world left click is
always normal click, other buttons do other things, but left is ALWAYS
normal. So it is probably not a great idea to set your mouse backwards
from everyone else or it will lead to confusion as you get used to your
mouse and then try to use someone else's computer and can't understand
why right clicking is doing all sorts of strange things.

Of course, this rule breaks down if you are one of the handful of people
that are left handed AND use the mouse on the left AND set the "left
handed" option that reverses the button functions.

Specifically to your issue (why it won't work as a double click), I have
NO idea. Make sure you don't have any MS software installed that might be
trying to override the USB Overdrive settings (or any other software,
including checking OS X's Mouse settings to be sure it isn't trying to
handle it directly... I know I haven't reinstalled USB Overdrive yet for
my mouse at home, and 10.3.5 has been automatically working the scroll
wheel and the right click, so Apple may have rolled basic multibutton
mouse features into 10.3)
