I have the same problem. Often the hotels will upon request provide a 
setting you can use, but what invariably works is to log in to iPass's 
Outgoing Mail Registration page. But that supposes you subscribe to 
iPass. Which is worth doing if you travel since it gives local call 
dialup access from almost everywhere on earth - though not Ethiopia as I 
have just discovered.

An alternative to iPass is Net2Roam which uses the gric global network.
