Just wanted to report back on the stalled unpacking problem and thank everyone for advice received.
After upgrading to OS 10.3.8 Emailer 2.0v3 would download messages but then stall as if trying to unload another, though webmail check of mailbox showed that there was nothing there to be downloaded. I tried chucking the Temp Incoming folder with no windows open beyond Emailer in List view, but to no permanent effect. What did eventually work was trashing Emailer Prefs, firing up CE again, ensuring the prefs file was in the Emailer folder then rebooting. That, touch wood, seems to have done the trick.
