I'm still on 8.6 and Chris' SMTP Auth hack works perfectly (thanks again, Chris!). So I think that Chris' answer to your question may be correct. This is just to confirm Chris' hack is OK on 8.6 (the lean, mean OS once characterized in MacWorld as the high point of the Mac OS). I'll move off 8.6 when it fails to do something that I need.
