Ok, the trick to getting Earthlink to work with the SMTP Auth hacked
version of emailer is to actually follow earthlink's directions in
setting up the email client :-)

I can put a big smile there, because I've already looked at their
directions and I completely missed the issue myself, and I know what I'm
looking at and what I'm looking for... so I fully expect most other
people to miss it as well.

It seems Earthlink has changed over to using the full email address as
the username. However, they must not have fully switched over to that, as
the POP server doesn't actually need the full address (although it does
work with the full address). BUT, the SMTP Server DOES need the full
address as the username part of the login. If you don't provide it, the
login hangs and then the server drops the connection, thus the Network
Stream Error that is being reported in Emailer's log file.

So the trick to get it to work is, change Emailer's Email ACCOUNT field
for the earthlink accounts to be the full email address followed by
@pop.earthlink.net. They explain this in their email client setup
directions... I just didn't pay enough attention when I looked at them
when S. Kennedy brought the problem to my attention.

So for example of the two people I know with the issue and I'm CCing
here, Don's would be "[EMAIL PROTECTED]@pop.earthlink.net" and S.
Kennedy's (may I call you S. for short ;-) ) would be
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]@pop.earthlink.net".

That will cause the full email address to be used as the username for
both POP and SMTP. I checked and it will work for POP, so it won't cause
and problems (Ok, Don, I lied, I did log into the pop server with the
address you gave me, but I swear, I didn't plan to, it was only to verify
that it would accept the full addy as the username.. and I didn't look at
the email you had there, of course you had none to look at... not that I
was looking to see... um... the pop server just gives you a message count
as soon as the login completes :-) )

So make that change, and you should be able to use the SMTP Auth hacked
version of Emailer to send email with Earthlink. Also be sure to have the
latest version of the hack from my web site (I know both of you have it,
but just in case anyone else is reading this too). The latest version
changes the HELO to EHLO which Earthlink requires or it won't let you use
SMTP Auth at all (which is technically correct via the RFC's, but most
other mail servers seem to ignore the difference).

And I'm sure you are thinking "But we can't have two @ signs in the
Account field". Don't worry, you can have two @s in the field, that was
the first thing I hacked in Emailer, and that hack is rolled into the
same SMTP Auth version.

Oh, and Don, thanks for the use of the account, you can change the
password back now, I'm done with it.
