Re: US satellite.
Now called DirecWay (was direcPC) and can be also bidirectional. Works great when you have no other alternative. Great for everything but games (lag time). Can get speeds between DSL and cable modem for downloads.
Also DISH network has satellite as well. comparable pricing to cable and DSL.

Thanks, Chris. You are quite correct in deducing
it seems like your version is bi-directional.at
You upload via Satallite as well as download. And it is really aimed
heavy travelers that will be in places that internet service justisn't
available (much like Satallite cell phones).
Much favoured by oil companies and war reporters. However I have learned
to keep my sat antenna wrapped up in dirty washing to avoid having it
confiscated at customs in the more paranoid countries. Mind you some
regard journalists as even worse than spies. In others email access can
be subject to control and censorship. It is almost more tiresome when one
is not sure if an email has gone through.
Speeds (which are about to improve) are around double dialup usually, so
just about OK for sending pix, though a batch of images would get
expensive. Fine if a newspaper or oil company is paying.
The simplicity of Emailer makes it a good combination in a zone where communications are otherwise precarious. But, as you say, not economic for everyday use.
Bestest
Julian
