I don't know if you can keep it from being published, but you can make it 
a closed membership list. You can set it up that the only people that can 
join are approved by a moderator. If you do that, then no spammer can get 
in unless you let them in. With a semi-public list as most are, spammers 
sneak in by signing up claiming to be a normal person interested in the 
topic, and once approved they start their spamming... with something like 
this proposed development list, there should be little to no unknown 
outside interest. Anyone that is interested will likely be someone one or 
more of the developers knows and can vouch for.

But, you still are faced with the group being published by Yahoo, which 
may bring attention to the project before the developer(s) want that to 
happen. I suspect you can't hide the group from being published in their 
list... Yahoo wants to claim they have as many lists as possible, as that 
helps them attact advertisers.
