Charles - I don't know the answer to your basic question, however your mention of "printable surface" makes me think there is some confusion on your part. I have a Epson printer that is designed to print directly on CD and DVD "printable surface" disc. If you have such a printer then these are the style disc that you want. If on the other hand you want to print labels and attach them to the disc, you can buy the less expensive generic surface disc.
