Chris writes,

<I'd guess that this time next year, when the PPC macs are all off the
line, and Intel are the only ones available... anything with a G3 will be
next to worthless.

The G4's on the otherhand *might* see a rise in price and people that
need the ability to run Classic snatch up the used ones that are worth
grabbing (anything under a G4 won't be worth it because OS X itself
doesn't run as nicely on the G3s).

So yeah, all those CRT based iMacs will start showing up curbside.

This is good news for people like me that find those units have lots of
life left in them and will be happy to grab them for pennies on the
dollar!>

Or less than that. My boyfriend works for a salvage fellow taking apart
things people trash for the purpose of salvaging/recycling and selling
useful components and metals. They get lots of computers, and my
boyfriend has been seeing, and dissecting plenty of Macs (thus far, G3
Beige DTs, MTs, B&Ws and iMacs mostly). I've already been a beneficiary
of this, since his boss says that within reason, he can take what he
wants.

In any case, not all G3s have problems on OS X. There are plenty of
people on LEM's G-list with B&W G3s who say they're running OS X very
well and love it. Me personally, I admit to living in the past (I totally
love 9.2.2 and am desperate to stay with Classic for as long as I can,
since all my files are in Classic apps). I have no desire at all, at
this point in time, to even try OS X, much less one of those
Macintels...and I have to say I feel more than a little resentful of the
fact that these new Macs won't run Classic at all. This really puts me
off to the point where -- should it happen somehow that I lose my
potential supply of free/cheap Macs that WILL run 9.2.2 (what I might get
from my boyfriend, or buy used and cheap from LEM's Swap List should I
have to replace my Beige G3 DT) -- I'm thinking that if I'm ever going to
HAVE TO make major changes in my computer usage (specifically, giving up
the Classic OS and having to learn OS X), I might just go with Linux
instead. Yes, I really AM that angry about the Macintel thing. At least
when Apple moved from 68Ks to PPCs, I could still run most or all of my
68K stuff on a PPC, even if not PPC stuff on 68Ks. In the meantime,
though, I'm sticking to what's comfortable for me, both as a computer
user, and as someone who doesn't have a couple thousand bucks to blow on
a new computer, new peripherals, and so on.

And, on that subject, Chris, as someone who lost her original CE 2.0v3
install disks to an ex-husband who took them when he moved out, thank you
for posting that download for the installer yesterday. :-) It really
bothered me that while I had backups of all my other apps and their
installers (and/or the originals on CDs), I didn't have one for CE. Now,
I do. Thank you so much. :-)
