In response to offlist comments I would add that there is a third solution to the problem of extending WiFi coverage, and that is to use household wiring to carry ethernet. However this didnt work for us as the two buildings were on different mains electrical circuits.
One such solution is the MicoLink dLAN Highspeed Starter Kit at around $160, maybe less from discount suppliers. It gained four and a half stars in MacWorld UK's review.
