You learned incorrectly. All PPC versions of OS X.4 support Classic (OS 9). Only if you have an Intel Processor based Mac can you not use Classic.
If you are running 10.4.1, then you should download the updates to 10.4.7 as many bug fixes and security fixes have been added. In fact, for the most part, if the Software Update tells you something is available, go ahead and install it (the exception are if it is for something you don't have, such as if you don't have an iPod or Airport, then there is no point to downloading updates related to those).
The only time I really hesitate is when it comes to full version changes of things. ie: If I'm running Quicktime 6.x and it tells me Quicktime 7 is available. That would be a full version change, and those I tend to look into the value vs problems before downloading (for instance, with Quicktime, my version 6 Pro license was rendered useless when I upgraded to v 7, had I just upgraded without first looking into those kinds of problems, I'd have been mighty annoyed when I needed to use a Pro feature and found myself SOL... iTunes had database changes, as did iPhoto when they both changed full version numbers, and those changes made them incompatible with previous versions of the software).
