Chris writes, <I actually started with computers even earlier than the Lisa (which oddly, I had AFTER I had my 128k Mac despite the fact that they came out first). [the rest snipped for brevity]>
I don't have the historical collection you do, hahaha! I fell in love with Macs in 1986 via the Mac Plus they gave me to use at work, but I couldn't afford to buy a Mac for myself at home until 1995. Yes, I went totally computerless at home for all those years, because everything else seemed like utter garbage in comparison to that Mac! In May of 1995 I got my Performa 475, who I liked very much, but ended up giving to my then husband in 1996 because we needed a second computer. The second computer was the 7200/120 I bought when I decided to let him have the Performa, which he took with him when he moved out (1999). I used and was very happy with the 7200 (through two OS's: the 7.5.5 it came with, then 8.1) until spring 2003, at which point I had to go to a minimum of OS 8.6. NOW, OS 8.6 CDs can be had on the extremely cheap easily on the Swap List, but at THAT time, the only two I could find were $169.95 and $110.00 respectively. It was easier and cheaper to buy the Beige G3 with OS 9.1 on it for $35 plus shipping I saw on the Swap List! So I bought myself a Beige, which got totally transwarped in the time I had it. (At this point, I had recently taken up with my computer-building geeky pack rat boyfriend who had or could get his hands on all sorts of stuff, even for Macs! :-D) \ This is what I bought from the Swap List: G3/233 DT Beige Rev 1, 96 MB RAM, 4 GB HD/OS 9.1 This is what my beloved geeky pack rat turned it into over the three years I was using it (final configuration): G3/400 DT Beige Rev 3, 768 MB RAM, 20 GB HD/OS 9.2.2, internal CDRW, internal Zip, Rage 128 video card, A/V card. During this past summer, I was starting to look into the idea of another processor upgrade (despite the fiasco we had with the upgrade to 400 MHz). I wanted and couldn't find a 600 MHz processor, and didn't want to put the $250+ into the 1.1 gig (I think it was) processor I found, IIRC, at OWC -- into the Beige. So, I asked my boyfriend to keep an eye out for a B&W -- THAT seemed "worth it" to me to buy the big expensive processor for. At the exact same time he found me one (mid-September), a fellow on the G3-G5 LEM list I occasionally correspond with offlist decided my name was on his "old" G4/867 Quicksilver, if I was willing to pay shipping. Uhhh, this was rather a no-brainer, huh? Yeah, I'll take that, thank you very much and WOO HOO! :-D So, now I have a G4. I still have the Beige too, but it's been relegated to the "spare" box -- which my 7200 was previously occupying. In addition to the fact that I haven't owned as many computers as you have, Chris, there's also the consideration that I live in a one-bedroom apartment, so I simply don't have room for anything I have no actual use for, or no possible use for. No, I'm not planning to go back to the Beige, I'm keeping it as a spare in case anything happens to the Quicksilver that might take awhile for my boyfriend to fix -- though he might still set up a B&W for me as a spare (we'll steal all that RAM and whatever useful goodies from the Beige in that case, though the Beige's internal zip already got stolen for the G4). There were a couple of occasions when I was mighty glad to have my 7200 when the Beige went down. I also have a couple of spare monitors "in case of emergency" too (which I actually did use as well). But, old stuff that's not "spares" -- it goes bye-bye, with the sole exception of: My Powerbooks! Powerbooks are nice and small, so I won't part with my older Powerbooks even though the one I use now is my "new" Lombard. My old Powerbooks are a 190, a 5300c, and a 5300ce. Yeah, they all run, so if the Lombard goes down, I'll still have a Powerbook (or two, or three, haha) when I need one. But I'd use a 5300, not the 190 anymore, as a spare. The 190 is here solely for sentimental reasons. It was my first Powerbook, it was a present from my boyfriend, I just can't get rid of it! (And, of course, it served as "the spare" when I got the first 5300...) ~Yersinia<---the pack rat's sewer rat... ________ PRESIDENT.SYS Corrupted: Re-boot Washington D.C.
