That is more or less correct about IBM's deal on DOS. I knew several of
the principals and Gary Kildall as not often accused of modesty. His CP/
M was the market leader and an IBM delegation arrived to see Gary about
licensing it. He was still out pleasure flying and when his secretary
radioed up to him he told the IBMers to wait. They did for 90 mins then left. 

Bill Gates called on *them* a few days later to demo "his" DOS (which
was pretty ragged). He does a good demo, does Bill. There was no
subterfuge beyond that, though, and of course Microsoft soon became the
tail that wagged the IBM dog on account of the terms of the license
which retained ultimate rights. At that stage IBM still thought like a
big computer, or at any rate a minicomputer company. Still do, really.
