I used the feature in eMailer all the time.  Actually, if I remember correctly, 
eMailer itself uses an AppleScript to do this little deed - it's just 
well-enough connected that it didn't feel like invoking a script.  

I can't speak for availability Mail, but I can provide a little moral support 
for looking into it.  When I switched to Mailsmith, it didn't have the feature, 
either.  But I quickly found a ready-made script that does it.  It's hard for 
me to believe there isn't one laying around somewhere for Mail, just waiting 
for you to pick it up and try it.
