So I guess my question is can PC folks not access SEA files (Drop
Stuff self extracting archives)? Do they need to have the free
version of Stuffit Expander?
I thought every computer came with that but you know what they say
about making assumptions.
A self extracting archive made on the Mac will not work on Windows,
two totally different worlds. Same reason any other Mac program
won't run on Windows (or vice versa).
Later versions of Stuffit Deluxe do allow you to make self
extracting archives that work on Windows, it will create a .exe
file instead of a .sea file. However, I'd recommend against doing
that as most (if not all) virus filters will flag a .exe attachment
and disallow it.
Your best bet, don't compress the files at all. Just attach them
all to the email and send it on its way. If for some reason you
need to compress them, then use Stuffit to create a ZIP file. If
your version of Stuffit can't do that, then you can create a
regular SIT file, and instruct your Windows friend to download
Stuffit Expander for Windows. (BTW: Stuffit Expander for Windows
will also unstuff those SEA files).
Foolish me I thought(hoped really) by creating a .sea file that be
would platform independent. I'll try to get the Windows version of
Expander installed on the recipient machine. Failing that I believe I
can make .zip files which the recipient should be able to handle. I
do like the password feature of the .sea -keeps out prying eyes. I
usually change the password each time to something esoteric mutually
known that would be very difficult to guess.
Stuffit does NOT come with Windows, heck, it doesn't even come with
new Macs.
I thought Expander came with Macs. Like I said silly me.
It's back to defrosting the freezer. Gotta get all those old bodies
out of there, they take up too much space. ;-}
thanks
