In OSX, I have no problem dragging the selection however I want - not sure why you can't. >b) though it makes a click sound, I don't know where the resulting snapshot >ends up. ( not on the desktop) You can search for the resulting pic by looking for a file called Picture 1 or Picture 2 - mine appear on my desktop in OSX, but I seem to remember them landing in my root folder (Mac HD) in OS 9.
