I've always been able to rebuild the database when there are orphaned
folders... however the results are not great. They will "vanish" and
leave the email all in one folder instead, and often deleted email
will be resurrected at the same time, leaving you with a heck of a
mess to try to clean up.
If a standard rebuild fails, try an advanced rebuild, and if that
fails, remove the Mail Index file from the Mail folder and relaunch
emailer, that will force it to write a brand new index... just be
prepared for things to no longer be where they belong.
The easier solution... keep regular backups :-)
