Embperl in Authentication Phase

Dear All,   I'm using embperl in the authentication phase, via Apache::AuthCookie to produce a login page.  It actually works pretty well but I'm experiencing one problem that I can't seem to get round - namely that my characters are being escaped; for example & is being converted in to &amp.  In normal embperl I'm able to turn this off with a simple $escmode=0, but this doesn't seem to have any effect under AuthCookie.   Anyone else tried this / experienced similar problems / know all the answers?
