Thanks to both Beau and Gerald. I suppose I deserve a reprimand for not reading the help files closely enough. I had actually read the page Gerald linked to and had somehow registered in my mind that the Embperl.so should be in my apache tree rather than my perl tree...hence the difficulty finding it. Anyway it's working now so I'm moving on!

Thanks guys,

Now I'm having problems with my configuration setup. I put:

PerlModule Embperl immediately after I loaded mod_perl. However, by
the time the config file gets down to my VirtualHost, it fails because
it doesn't recognize the directives EMBPERL_APPNAME or
EMBPERL_OBJECT_BASE. I've already tried changing PerlModule Embperl to
PerlModule Embperl::Object. I also tried putting both of these
PerlModule directives inside the VirtualHost block.

Should there be a dynamic module library, i.e. Embperl.so to load?
From what I can tell, the make install did not load any such module
into my apache tree.

Yes there is an Embperl.so - it's in the Perl lib tree and should be
loaded _after_ mod_perl. A snip of my httpd.conf:

[...]
LoadModule perl_module /home/test/usr/2.1/lib/apache/mod_perl.so
LoadModule apreq_module /home/test/usr/2.1/lib/apache/mod_apreq.so
LoadModule cgid_module /home/test/usr/2.1/lib/apache/mod_cgid.so
LoadModule embperl_module \
"/home/test/perl/5.8.3-2.1/lib/site_perl/5.8.3/i686-linux-thread- multi/auto/Embperl/Embperl.so"
[...]
