First of all, I gotta say it's a very good topic. This is an area that can take
some improvement.
Would this input be active only when starting the spindle? When changing
spindle speed?
Or always? (e.g. if the spindle speed drops too much, the ladder takes this bit
low, and emc2 stops with an error message).
Note: for regular users that don't care about this I'd have the pin default to
1 (current behaviour).

Alex

Subject: [Emc-developers] spindle control
I was looking at the spindle control pins on the latest EMC2 build from the
Ubuntu live CD and had a few questions about operation. Some high speed
spindles can take several seconds to get up to speed, and some spindles may be
under manual control. I know manual control sounds stupid, but some machines
like the old Bridgeport Boss series use reeves sheeves and an air motor for
speed control. You have to turn the spindle on to set the speed with the air
motor. These are better left under manual control with EMC being able to stop
the spindle. However, EMC needs some idication that the spindle is indeed on
(after commanding it on), and at the proper speed.
The only reasonable solution I see at the moment is to use some external
ladder logic and take advantage of the feed-hold pin. However, this seems like
a bit of a kludge. I think some sort of "spindle-up-to-speed" handshake input
needs to be added to motion. Am I missing something?
Best Regards,
~petev
