Gentlemen,
I currently have machine tools with Fanuc controls that use the G54
in both fashions. Depending on how the builder set the parameters one
machine uses the G54 as a common offset. The common offset changes the
position of every other offset by the value in the G54 registers.
Another machine uses the G54 offset as just another offset having no
affect on any other offset.
In 1980/1981 when I was running my first CNC mill (a Monarch VMC 75
with GE 1050 control) the service man from Monarch drilled, bored and
reamed a hole in the table after the machine was set up. This was to
pin the subplate to the work table. Any offsets used on the subplate
were referenced to the pin. If the pin moved in reference to the
machine home then by dialing in the pin and setting the G54 offset we
could have all the other offset correct without having to change any
of them. That was the plan. We never used it as such. We never used
the G54 because of this 'feature'. I was used to never using G54 and
was shocked to see others use it when I left that shop.
I like it better as just another offset but it can be useful as a
common (master) offset.
thanks
Stuart
