I would do what I always do.
I would take a perfectly working piece of code and use it as a
template for my own - that is experimenting.
Then, the stages of experiment are:
working well,
modified and working,
modified more and working perfectly,
modified even more and not working at all,
repaired and not even compiling.
starting again from the beginning.

On the second run everything goes much better as you know many of the
process variables from your own experience and not only from a paper.
