It seems that with linux-rt almost all RT stuff can run in userspace. In fact, I think it should be possible to run a parport based setup fully in userspace, because you can easily access the parport hardware from userspace via iopl(). So what could possibly be difficult in RTAPI to port? We certainly won't get the same performance with it, yet. linux-rt still has some latency issues to be solved. But I think in the future linux-rt could be better than RTAI, especially because linux-rt is being slowly merged to mainline. So in the long term it could reduce complexity in EMC.
