Gentle persons:

I just edited the Wiki home page, wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl, to
get of the irritating spurious "?" marks (e.g., the Wiki's indication of
a missing link) introduced by the substitution of "LinuxCNC", which is a
WikiWiki word, and displays as "LinuxCNC?". In the process, I got rid of
several others, for example, "CompactFlash?".

I noticed a lot a gratuitous usage of "LinuxCNC". For example, "Circular
Pocketing Hass like subroutines for LinuxCNC" would be just as
meaningful on our Wiki if it read "Circular Pocketing Hass like
subroutines" (I just grabbed this line at random, there's plenty of
others). Less is more.

I also noticed we have already created some meaningless entries, just as
others have alluded to. There was no LinuxCNC presence at the 2009 NAMES
conference; there is no LinuxCNCRepStrap 3d printer page on the RepRap
site; and so it goes.

There are still lots of legitimately broken links on this page because,
for example, editing "[About emc]" to be "[About LinuxCNC]" broke the
association with the original target page
"wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?EmcVersion2"

My thought is, for each missing link, to create a new target page (so it
has the correct url), copy the contents of the original target page into
it, and then edit the contexts to implement the name change. The
original target pages would identified in a list somewhere as orphans to
be cleaned up by a system admin.

Any thoughts?

Anybody doing something behind the scenes that wannabe editors should
know about?

Regards,
Kent
