I'm pretty sure that the MEL at NIST did some work in building work 
centers with
machine tools and robots to load/unload workpieces.  I thought I saw 
some pics of
those a long time ago.  There is a guy doing a pick and place machine 
with something
like drip feeding.  He moves the part over a camera, then extracts 
correction
info from the image and then sends altered G-code so the machine will 
plant the
component with correct offset and rotation.  So, he is doing very small 
G-code
files of just a couple lines at a time.  This was just reported with a 
video within
the last 2 weeks.
