I have no position on inotify, other than to thank Gene for calling it 
to attention.

As for concern about new dependencies, there are two parts to the problem.

Satisfying the dependency is the trivial part in any OS that offers a 
decent-sized repository. Look at how much gets pulled into a fresh 
Ubuntu installation now when one tries to build LinuxCNC from source.

Making sure the package is really necessary is harder. One version of 
Occam's Razor states "entities shall not multiply without necessity". I 
think it applies to LinuxCNC.
