thanks - all in place now; mostly working around missing kernel environment

I use ppdev - open parport%d and reserve/release the device with ioctl 
PPCLAIM/PPRELEASE
read the parport%d entry to get register range and status
use ioperm() for direct access to register

the TSC says: 
direct register I/O ca 1.7usec/write
ioctl based write ca 2.8 usec/write on a Intel D525
