I've investigated the Raspberry situation a bit

- the current 'default' Raspbian kernel comes with the RT_PREEMPT patch
enabled; I still need to check whether it's the right option combination though
- gpio registers are memory-mapped so pins can be read and wiggled by mapping
the a part of /dev/mem into userspace and manipulating memory - a blueprint
how to do this can be found in http://code.google.com/p/raspberry-gpio-python/,
file
http://code.google.com/p/raspberry-gpio-python/source/browse/source/c_gpio.c

seems straightforward to base a hal_gpio userland HAL driver component on this
