You do need to have the kernel headers available, they just typically
aren't installed as a package.  You should have copied over the
headers and modules directories as part of installing the kernel, right?

If you want, you can also test with Michael's xenomai kernels for the
'Bone.  Links to the files and directions for use are in the wiki:

You can have Michael's kernel installed along side whatever kernel's
you're testing assuming you have enough SD card space.  Just switch
around the kernels in the uboot partition and reboot to change the
run-time kernel.
