Gentlemen,
WHILE you are talking about and working on Wear Offsets I have a couple
comments.

I have run a couple lathes that would change the offset in the middle of
the program.
ex. I would change the offset while the machine is running a program. The
machine would finish the line it was running while I changed the offset.
The next line would implement the change I had made in the offset register.
I liked that feature. I don't remember scrapping any parts while using this
'feature'. I would like this feature available.

I like the 5 axis tool length compensation ability. I also want 5 axis
cutter diameter compensation. The current implementation of cutter diameter
compensation will not allow 5 axis cutter diameter compensation as the
current cutter diameter compensation uses fillets and corner rounds at
line intersections. 5 axis programs are all point to point programs eg
X Y Z A B
X Y Z A B
X Y Z A B.

There are no G2/G3 hence there are no radius moves. The distance between
each point to point can be as small as .001. The only problem I have with
the current situation is I don't have a choice the disable the 'helpful'
fillet and corner rounding calculations.

I have run a number of machines with wear compensation offsets. I have
never used them. I found them to be bothersome. Theoretically, I see the
application. Empirically, I did not like it. You can never 'KNOW' the
insert point will cut accurate after an insert change or rotation until you
have made a cut with it. You must then have the machine programmed to leave
a little material on the part when the wear offset is zero. I always
thought it just as easy to change the main offset to adjust the tool path.

Offset changes should be either or both additive and total per the
integrator/users choice.

Just a few talking/thinking points for the times you are
talking/thinking/working. :)
If I think of something else I will be sure to chime in.

thanks
Stuart
