Assuming these are the multiturn mechanical encoders, I suspect this is 
possible in the similar way that the Mesa resolver interface simulates index, 
in this case basically just a numerical comparison to generate the simulated 
home switch. Of course if its a full motion range absolute encoder you should 
be able to skip homing altogether...
