The best way to check for missing build dependencies is this:

$ cd debian

$ ./configure sim  # if you're building sim, or...
$ ./configure -r   # if you're building realtime

$ cd ..
$ dpkg-checkbuilddeps

That'll list all the build dependencies that are missing from your build 
system.
