I spoke with Tom on the phone about this, but for anyone else who is
also using a system with Intel's Cedarview CPU which has the abominable
PowerVR/Imagination Tech video hardware, the problem is that the
proprietary drivers only work with certain kernel versions.

What's happened to Tom, and to me earlier, is that if you enable these
proprietary drivers, then change your kernel (as you would when
installing one of JohnM's kernel packages), the driver will fail to
load due to its incompatibility with your new Xenomai kernel. The final
result is: No Xwindows :)

To get X back, reboot the system and hold down the 'Shift' key to bring
up the Grub menu, then pick 'Previous Linux versions' which will give
you the choice of your old kernel to boot. Once you're back up on the
old kernel and have the GUI back, simply disable the proprietary
'Cedarview' drivers. Then you can boot the Xenomai kernel and X will
work.

Thanks,
Matt
