I think this an interesting case in itself even if it doesn't prove to 
be the reason for your bad prints. I didn't try the mini GUI when I was 
looking at the computational burden imposed on my BBB by LCNC but 
turning on the backplot in other GUIs certainly kicked up the numbers 
reported by 'top'. Do you see/hear the effect only while loading the 
backplot or does it continue as long as the backplot is running? How 
loaded is the CPU? Is there any swapping going on?

What GUI is David running? Has he also observed the behavior you report?

Sorry I'm not in a position just now to replicate your results.
