I would think my wording about the status didnt leave much room for 
interpretation.

As far as premature merges into master go, there were certainly some really bad 
examples recently. I fully concur this should not be repeated, as it has caused 
lots of wasted work for other people than the author, literally stretching over 
months. 

So I think your feature branch suggestion is a really valid one, and should be 
heeded by all involved.
