Like jmk, I'm wary of the idea of introducing NaNs onto hal signals.
Not quite the same thing, but we've experienced in nontrivial kinematics
that a NaN output from forward or inverse kins can propagate in such a
way that you can't recover without shutting down and restarting LinuxCNC
(e.g., "my positions are all NaNs now and I homing doesn't help")

That said, you should feel free to experiment.  You can produce a NaN
value with the expresion: __builtin_nan("") (gcc extension)
