As for the PC version of master as currently coming out of the buildbot: as Seb says - Ubuntu Note as of yet the Unified Build branch has not been merged, meaning if you want to work with this code base right now, currently you need to work from github.com/mhaberler/linuxcnc, which is a jour with master as of today This particular branch is routinely built on a wider range of platforms - RHEL, Fedora, Debian, and the Armv7 Debian build for the Beaglebone. In terms of RT kernels, RT-PREEMPT is the easiest to work with over a wide range of platforms. I run all sorts of rt-preempt kernels from stock Debian 3.0.something-rt to hand-built 3.12-rt on the same wheezy and jessie machines and it makes no difference for my mill. The current PC Xenomai kernel is at 3.5.7 and works fine on the Debian and Ubuntu machines I use. I've tried the 3.8.13 Xenomai kernel on PC's, no observable difference. Overall I'd say the question of a 'match' of kernel versions isnt that terribly important any more as it used to - the times when we were locked into an old kernel and held up with upgrading the userland environment are over, and the feature sets used from the RT kernels are so small the version numbers dont really matter. I did observe significant improvments in latency with the new RT-PREEMPT kernels, so it's worth considering a recent strain here. I wouldnt be able to tell a significant performance difference for the RTAI and Xenomai kernels over a range of versions. -- I do remember that there was some consensus in Wichita to move towards Debian as primary goal longer term, because Debian has the highest 'infection rate' of all distros and the Unified Build branch could run off a stock Debian-provided RT-PREEMPT kernel, i.e. without other non-Debian provided packages. This means the need for a 'LiveCD' type aid as a primary means of distribution will largely go away. At least I continue to work on this assumption. We still need a Debian developer to sponsor and shepherd the Debian inclusion process, though. But the UB code base should be ready for that step. - Michael > > Thanks, > > Brian Morel > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Rapidly troubleshoot problems before they affect your business.
