ok - It looks like it only works for simulator.  (I built and ran 
simulator and I get a ton more output to terminal.)  I will run it this 
way and see if I get the jump.

one more issue -

linuxcnc ~/linuxcnc-dev/configs/sim/axis/axis.ini > test.log

When I do that - all I get is the bootup of linuxcnc in the log file.  
Everything else goes back to the terminal..
