I just tried your script again with a different configuration, my
BeBoPr-Bridge setup from:

https://github.com/cdsteinkuehler/linuxcnc/tree/MachineKit-ubc/configs/ARM/BeagleBone/BeBoPr-Bridge

...and all seems well.  LinuxCNC launched without any manual tweaks to
the configuration required.  This configuration had limits setup for all
the axis, unlike the K9 configuration I tried first.

Thanks again for the script, it's already saved me a lot of time!
