An excellent question Chris. > Well we do roughly follow fanuc gcode..but I agree: > if there really is no standard then a switch is fine and no reason to > cause problems for existing linuxcnc users - no up side. > > Chris M Well, now, FWIW, has LinuxCNC actually become the defacto 800 lb gorilla, effectively setting the best known industry standard for how its done? While I rather like the thought that we have begun to swing that bigger hammer, that should also put this group on notice to get ALL the licensing Ducks lined up so that if we find our code in a commercial product, a plan of enforcement action should be laid out and used. If its all GPL at the end of the next edition push, then perhaps we might see if Bradley Kuhn can off some assistance. That would be the equ of sending a pretty well educated dog into the fray. I am firmly in the GPL camp, but I am also well aware that this codes composition is generally a labor of love, but I would certainly not have a problem with the Red Hat model of selling support on a per seat basis with an annual fee per seat. Whether that can suffice to fund enforcement actions too, I have no clue. But its for sure a small seat fee per year that was spent on food & drink at the more or less annual Wichita meetup, would be to me money well spent. I've owed this group lunch and a beer more than once. I have presently 2 machines running it, and would have zero trouble convincing myself its worth $50/seat/year to me. The Red Hat model, at $700/seat/year does seem like its excessive though. My $0.02 (in 1934 dollars of course :) Cheers, Gene -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo.
