The Administrator -> Community Builder -> Tools -> Check Users Database option shows 5000+ users without a table entry.
I suspect that this is why the left-side status display has been showing 551 users, 4 unapproved Avatars, 16 user Reports and 1 Unban request for ever. The suggestion is to click the "Synchronise Users" link, but I am nervous about doing so in case it synchronises the wrong way.
