Greetings;

I have just been thru a week of hell trying to make a working amanda
installation from the current "stable" tarball, something I have been doing
routinely for in excess of a decade.

I was stymied on three fronts.

1. in the process of doing all this, after adding the amanda entries to
/etc/passwd and /etc/group by hand, I had Authorization failures, reported
to the terminal screen with an (ignored) appended.

That turned out to be because pwconv had not been run to update /etc/shadow.

2. Swig2 is not part of the default install from the hybride.iso, and the
./configure for building amanda fails. Only a very small error in the config
log about it, whereas IMO the ./configure should have treated it as a show
stopper. Reported to the amanda list of course. There is of course lots of
room, in the iso to add that the next time the iso is refreshed/baked.

3. The su command supplied is broken in that it does not appear to make an
attempt to give the su amanda user, the environment that the user amanda has
if logged in as amanda.

This in turn makes it extremely difficult to troubleshoot the problems when
the environment you get from the 'su amanda -c "command" is totally fubar'd
but if the amanda crontab entry does it, its all cool as it does get the
right environment.

Is this "su" problem bothering anyone else?

Thanks.

Cheers, Gene Heskett
