For a rear tool configuration, the hardware is easy enough. One just 
sets the X axis section in the .ini file to have the +X direction go 
away from the operator position. The other issue is in getting the 
backplot (Gremlin) to match. Normally the axes on any machine follow the 
right hand rule:

For a lathe, +X (index finger) points towards the operator, +y (middle 
finger) points down to the floor, and +Z (thumb) points to the right. 
For a rear tool lathe, we can rotate the right-hand frame about Z (keep 
the thumb steady and bend the wrist so that the index finger points 
away) such that the +Y points up.

In the link above, this proved to be too challenging and a left-hand 
frame was adopted by finding the X axis code and reversing the sense.

I think in practice, with front or rear tool lathes, tools are often 
used on both sides, so the axis configuration may not be all that important.
